Be strong, forever! Just by citing the refrain that most represents the Maori spirit, Mahe Drysdale, the forty-two year old New Zealander single sculler, Olympic champion in Rio 2016 on his and our 'all black' Filippi boat, concluded his private letter of farewell to rowing and to his potential fifth Olympics.
A message full of thanks and poignant memories.
One in particular was addressed to our David Filippi - “I need to thank David Filippi at Filippi boats for all the beautiful boats and designs over the years”- that show the depth of a champion, who will remain in the history of this sport, not only for having won 3 Olympic medals (two gold and one bronze) in 4 Olympic games.
Mahe is much more.
He is perhaps the best testimonial of this discipline out of the water. Those who had the fortune to meet him for several years in Turin at Silver Skiff, far from racing trance, cannot forget his humanity, his humility, his politeness and as far as we are concerned, his willingness to test innovative products that we often offered him.
Long life to you and your family dear Mahe, hoping you remain in the world of rowing that surely still needs you...
Ake Ake, Kia Kaha!
